Welcome to PWAC’s website. You may notice that the site is often changing, as any website should, but the changes might be subtle. I invite you to check the different pages and find out what’s new. I also invite you to check back in September (2019) as there will be even more changes.
We will have presented three sessions about various aspects about being a non-fiction writer at the When Words Collide festival (WWC) in Calgary in August. Details about those sessions are on our Conference page. We will also have had the opportunity to learn how all writers, regardless of genre, can learn from and support each other, especially when it comes to protecting our copyright and being paid fairly for our work. As many writers know these are changing times with more publishing platforms being developed both in print and online. Finding work may not be as challenging as finding work that is both satisfying and well-paying. Advocacy for this needs to continue.
PWAC made some bold steps in advocacy work in 2018, with appearances before two House of Commons committees undertaking a review of the Copyright Act. As was pointed out many times during the hearings, writers and other content creators are embattled as never before. Working with other writers and the organizations that represent them gives PWAC a stronger voice for future advocacy work. We will continue with this work to promote and protect the rights of writers, as has been our mandate since PWAC was formed in 1976. While many things have changed, and will continue to change for writers, PWAC will continue with that mandate.
We welcome all non-fiction writers to PWAC. We know that while the writing, and the work that supports the writing, may be solitary, there is strength in numbers. Please take a few moments to learn more about PWAC and its membership benefits and Join Us. You’ll be glad you did!
